It was 1849 and times were as sombre as a funeral for most people, but far worse by a long stretch for ten year old twins Albert and Florrie Leadington. After being rescued from Mrs. Snagglesnarle's vile orphanage in Victorian London by the rather hapless Mr. Arthur Canarthy, they discover their parents aren't actually dead but if the children are ever to be reunited with their family, they must complete twelve dangerous and twisted quests in as many months.
Their epic journey has already seen them travelling to France with their new guardian and a group of smugglers, including the rough and ready Ebenezer Smythe.
After narrowly escaping a gruesome death at the hands of the murderous Bluebeard, they are about to discover far worse is still to come when the second quest is revealed to procure a dragon's tooth. But it quickly becomes clear that dark magic is at play and danger is waiting to pounce at every corner.
